You are not eligible for statutory sick pay if you’re self-employed – though if you have to take time off work and don’t get paid while you’re off, you might be entitled to claim benefits.
If you’re not claiming any benefits you might be entitled to claim employment and support allowance (ESA) or Universal Credit to top up your income. We are aware some changes are due to be made to these benefits in response to the coronavirus pandemic.
A dedicated helpline has been set up to help businesses and self-employed individuals in financial distress and with outstanding tax liabilities receive support with their tax affairs. Through this, businesses may be able to agree a bespoke Time to Pay arrangement. If you are concerned about being able to pay your tax due to COVID-19, call HMRC’s dedicated helpline on 0800 0159 559.

Anxiety and wellness
Anxiety can rise because we’re facing a distressing threat like the new Coronavirus:
- Connect with friends and loved ones through video chats, calls, texting, and email.
- Stick with sources of credible medical information, so you can avoid misinformation. Do not overdose on hype or worry or misinformation.
- Take regular updates from credible sources in the morning and check again briefly toward the end of the day. There’s no need to stay tuned in 24/7 — it can actually make your anxiety much, much worse.
- Opt for healthier food options and try to undertake forms of exercise
