Driving Lessons and Tests postponed in Scotland

As announced by The Scottish Government announced on 19 December, mainland Scotland will be moving into Level 4 restrictions from 00:01 on 26 December for a period of 3 weeks.

This means that a series of restrictive measures will be in place to help stop the spread of coronavirus.

You can read more about the measures on the Scottish Government’s website.

Driving lessons in level 4 areas

The Scottish Government has confirmed that driving lessons will be suspended in all areas that move into protection level 4.

If you live in an area under level 4 restrictions, you must not travel out of this area to have driving lessons or take a driving test.

Pupils can still have private practise using their own car if they and the supervising driver are from the same household and it is part of an essential journey.

Lower level area travel restrictions

If you live in protection levels 0-3 you can continue to have driving lessons, as long as they don’t live in a protection level 4 area.

Driving tests in level 4 areas

All car driving tests will be suspended in protection level 4 areas. This includes ADI part 2 and 3 tests and standards checks.

Test bookings

The DVSA will email pupils who are affected by this to let them know that they will reschedule their test for the first available date.

The DVSA will then send your Instructor an email with the new time and date as soon as possible; the DVSA asks for pupils to be patient.

If the new time and date isn’t suitable for the pupil, they can choose a different time and date on GOV.UK.

Travelling out of a level 4 area for a test

The Scottish Government is putting travel restrictions into law to further enforce the current guidance that restricts people who live in a level 4 local authority area from travelling outside their local authority except for an essential purpose.

Any pupils who live in an area under protection level 4 must not travel out of the affected area to take a test. If they do, the examiner will not be able to test them.

Driving Tests in other level areas

As a result of level 4 travel restrictions DVSA examiners are unable to travel to other areas in lower levels to take driving tests. They are therefore suspending all tests booked in protection levels 0-3, where the examiner is coming from level 4, until the travel restrictions are lifted. This includes ADI part 2 and 3 tests and standards checks.

Theory tests in level 4 areas

All theory tests will be suspended in areas moved into protection level 4. The DVSA will email candidates affected by this to let them know their theory test is on hold and that they will need to reschedule it by visiting the Gov website.

This is in line with the Scottish Government guidance.

Theory Tests in other level areas

As a result of level 4 travel restrictions theory tests in some protection level 0-3 areas levels will not take place as examiners are unable to travel from level 4 areas. We will email candidates affected by this to let them know their theory test is on hold and that they will need to reschedule it by visiting https://www.gov.uk/change-theory-test.

Theory Tests will go ahead in:

  • Lerwick
  • Kirkwall
  • Stornoway

All other Theory Tests will be suspended until the travel restrictions are lifted. The DVSA will email those candidates affected.
