What are Intensive Driving Courses?

Many people when they begin their driving journey, are desperate to get on the road as soon as possible. Whilst this is understandable, it doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s the most sensible route. Everyone’s journey to achieving their license is different. Different obstacles to climb, different strengths, and areas to improve. With time, we can help mould you into a safe driver who can explore the road with confidence!

Intensive driving “crash” courses, aim to prepare students for their driving tests in as little time as possible. This can be in as little as 1-3 weeks. In this timeframe, multiple daily lessons are packed into a short period. This might sound perfect, but it doesn’t guarantee that you’ll be confident once you’re on the road alone.

You may be wondering, should I do an intensive crash course? The truth is, there is no law to suggest you cannot take an intensive driving course to get you on the road as soon as possible. If you’re in a rush, then maybe it’s right for you. However, at Bill Plant Driving School, we think that intensive learning prepares you for your test, but graduated learning prepares you for life at the wheel.

What is Graduated Learning?

Graduated learning is our preferred way of teaching you how to drive. Graduated learning does not give you a lesson deadline, you simply drive until you feel ready for your test! How long it takes for learners to be test-ready, depends on the learner. You can be test-ready in as few as 10 hours!

Why Don't We Offer Intensive Driving Courses Anymore?
Not Enough Time To Hone Your Craft

The DVSA suggests that it takes the average person 45 hours of lessons to learn how to drive, on top of 22 hours of practice outside of lessons. So, if you try and squeeze in 67 hours of driving into 2 weeks, you’re driving an average of almost 5 hours per day (not accounting for any days off)! Realistically, it’s unlikely that you’re going to drive that much in such a short space of time. This means that you’re not getting enough on-road experience to properly know how to safely navigate the roads in the long term.

Physically & Mentally Exhausting

To expect people to go from driving amateurs to experts in a matter of weeks is a big ask. Driving for such a long time each day can be physically and mentally exhausting. This may negatively impact the learner’s performance and ability to focus during the lessons, and even on the day of their test! Not only can it impact their focus on the road, but this mental exhaustion will impact their abilities to retain information given to them by instructors, leading to unsafe driving habits.

Driving in Difficult Weather Conditions

By learning to drive in only a matter of weeks, you’re not giving yourself enough time to learn how to drive in different weather conditions. There is a big difference between driving on a dry summer’s day and driving through a hailstorm on a dark, winter’s night. It’s important to drive in these conditions as a learner, to stop you from being overwhelmed when it eventually comes to driving in these conditions when you’re on the road alone.

Award-Winning Learning

In every lesson of ours, safety is prioritised. We aim to ensure that every student understands how to control their vehicles in a variety of conditions and scenarios because this is what prepares someone for the road, not just their test. Driving in the dark, rain, snow, or ice, poses its own set of challenges for drivers to overcome. If you spread out your driving lessons over a longer period, you can combat these weather conditions with an experienced Driving Instructor by your side.

Our graduated approach to teaching is what has seen the public vote us as the National Driving School of the Year, for the 2nd year running! We’ve got a team of incredible Instructors who’ll be able to give you all the information, support, and time you need to become a driver who’s ready to take on the world!
