Franchise fee assistance due to Coronavirus

As communicated yesterday, due to the latest Government and industry advice we have taken the unprecedented decision to postpone all driving lessons, and to cease all in-car and classroom driver assessments and training, except for teaching key workers where necessary.

The Government has introduced a lockdown period for 3 weeks. The industry advice published to date suggests re-instatement of lessons could take place at the end of April, in 6 weeks.

Franchise fee assistance
Therefore, for the next 6 weeks until the end of April (including this week), we are reducing the franchise fee to £65 per week. As you will know, this week’s direct debit will already have been processed by the banks. We will therefore apply a credit to your account to reflect any overpayment for this week.

You do not need to change or cancel anything, nor contact Instructor Support or the Finance Department for this.

We will continue to provide franchisees with a vehicle and insurance, which can be used for limited mileage (we recommend no more than 50 miles per week) and will be helpful in any emergency, or to provide charitable assistance in the local community as we know many of you are doing.

The company is continuing to take lesson bookings for when teaching recommences, so that instructors will be busier than ever. The Relationship Managers are providing assistance and advice to many of you. The School is continuing to support Instructors as best it can.

Government advice and support
You will have read of the measures the Government has introduced to support businesses, and I know many of you believe the Driving School will benefit from this.  In time we hope to do so. However, let me assure you that to date, accessing any support is proving extremely difficult and there will be no funding available to support the company in the short term.

We are aware of the latest Coronavirus Bill relating to Statutory Self Employment Pay. We will keep the Instructor Support Page up to date on this matter and send you important announcements via SMS. For current Government advice please visit this link –

Instructor Support
Should you need any guidance other than what has been communicated please do contact your Relationship Manager in the Instructor Support Team on 01765 643374. Please note the Team and I are extremely busy dealing with a high volume of questions. Please bear with us, we will get back to every enquiry.

This is a worrying and challenging time for everyone, and we want to do all we can to support instructors, staff and trainees. From everyone at Bill Plant Driving School, stay safe.

Kind regards

Tom Hixon
