Once you reach the age of 17 you can apply for a provisional driving license. (If you’re claiming mobility allowance, then you apply at the age of 16 but this is the only exception). The cost of an online application is £34 – postal applications are £43.
Provisional Driving License Application Form
The form you will require is Form D1, this can be requested in person at your local post office. Alternatively, you can request the form online through the DVLA website.
Proving Your Identity
In addition to filling in the form, you must provide the DVLA (the government department that approves license applications) with some form of identification documentation.
The following documentation is accepted by the DVLA as confirmation of your identity:
• Full valid passport
• Birth certificate
• Certificate of Registry of Birth (Provided your name is present on the certificate)
• Adoption certificate
• ID Card issued by a member state of the EC/EEA
• Travel Documents issued by the Home Office
• Certificate of Naturalisation or Registration
If your name is different from that shown on the identification document you must also supply supporting documentary evidence to confirm your change of name e.g. Marriage Certificate, Decree Absolute or Decree Nisi papers, Deed Poll or Statutory Declaration.
