Learn to drive in London
Learning to drive in London can be a daunting task, with the capital’s roads not being the most friendly for novice drivers or anyone who’s yet to build up their confidence. One-way streets, complex networks of A-roads, and residential areas lined with vehicles all make for something that can be intimidating even to experienced drivers.
This shouldn’t deter you from deciding to learn to drive, though, as it is one of life’s most valuable skills. The important thing to ensure is that you book your lessons with a qualified, highly-competent driving instructor who can deliver tuition that stands you in good stead to pass with flying colours when the test day comes.
Why choose a Bill Plant Driving School instructor in London?

Some won’t be able to offer flexible lesson times or have DVSA-registered instructors. Choosing to book your driving lessons with Bill Plant Driving School will guarantee high-quality lessons from professional instructors in your local area, giving you the best possible chance of passing on your first attempt.

Driving lessons in London FAQs
- Which London driving test centre has the highest pass rate?
Like most regions in the UK, London test centres have different pass rates. These are determined largely by the preplanned test routes available to learners, with different routes including different hazards, challenges, and obstacles.
On average, London’s pass rate is lower than the national rate – 41% compared with 46%. But, there are certain areas of London where the pass rate is far higher than the national average. Borehamwood’s test centre, for example, had a pass rate of 57% in 2021, the highest of all the test centres in the capital.
- Which London driving test centre should I choose?
Depending on where you live or where you choose to take your driving lessons, there may be a number of different test centres nearby. Ask your instructor about the test routes available at each centre before booking your test as there may be particular areas of London that you want to avoid due to busy roads, lack of familiarity or otherwise.
- Is driving in London more difficult than elsewhere in the UK?
Some people do think that learning to drive in London is more difficult than it is in other regions of the UK, but this shouldn’t dissuade you from learning altogether. Having a skilled, experienced instructor is crucial for making sure that you are able to build up your confidence and gain all the knowledge you need to drive safely on London’s roads. In the end, wherever you choose to learn to drive, you’ll have to be able to demonstrate the same skills and abilities in order to pass your test.
- What types of driving lessons are there in London?
Bill Plant Driving School offers a range of courses and lessons to suit learners of types. Our instructors provide:
- Intensive driving courses for anyone looking to pass their test as quickly as possible
- Pass Plus courses for learners wanting additional training for driving in bad weather, on rural roads, and at night
- Automatic driving lessons for people who don’t want to learn how to drive a manual car
- Refresher driving lessons for anyone who wants to top up their driving skills after not having driven for a period of time
- Motorway driving lessons for anyone who has recently passed their test but wants to build up their confidence when driving on the UK’s motorways
Driving in London
As the most densely-populated area of the UK, London can be a challenging place to drive. With lots of busy roads, pedestrians and other hazards, there are many things for drivers to be aware of. And since so many tourists visit London each day, there are lots of people – both drivers and pedestrians alike – who are unfamiliar with the city’s roads.
But this shouldn’t put you off driving in London. Learning to drive in London is a great way to become familiar with the city’s roads and drivers, which will in turn give you that all-important confidence when it comes to navigating London’s roads.
Roundabouts in London
Just like all cities, London is home to a number of roundabouts. These can get incredibly busy, thanks to the 3.7 million car journeys that happen within London every single day. However, this doesn’t make them any different to others in the UK – the same rules for driving on a roundabout still apply.
There are a number of famous roundabouts within London, that learner drivers might need to navigate. These include:
- Hatton Cross Roundabout – made up of five mini roundabouts in one.Old Street Roundabout – which is actually more of a square than a circle, and has a number of restaurants underneath it.
- Westway Roundabout – which has been referenced in songs by Blur and The Clash.
Motorways and major roads in London
While Central London itself is made up of a lot of residential streets and A-roads, the majority of Greater London is encircled by the famous M25, or London’s Orbital Motorway. Constructed in 1975, this 117-mile road is one of the UK’s busiest. Approximately 200,000 cars use the M25 every single day – meaning a lot of other road users to be aware of.
Alongside the M25, there are also a number of other motorways serving the Greater London area. If you’re driving to London from elsewhere in the UK, you might find yourself driving on the M11 from the north, M2 from the south-east, or M4 from the west.
