Top Tips for Driving in Scarborough

Get Comfortable with Weaponness Valley Road Roundabout

The Weaponness Valley Road roundabout, where the A64 meets Valley Road, is one of Scarborough’s busiest spots. It’s important to approach in the correct lane, use your mirrors, and signal clearly. Take your time to practise here during quieter periods to build your confidence and get used to busier traffic. Once you’ve mastered it, other roundabouts will feel much easier.

Practise on Scarborough’s Beachside Roads

Beachside roads like Marine Drive are beautiful but can be challenging, with sharp bends and changing speed limits. In summer, they get busy with tourists and cyclists, so practising at quieter times is a good idea. Keep your speed steady and stay focused on the road, as these routes are great for improving control and awareness.

Learn the Town Centre One-Way System

Scarborough’s town centre, with streets like Westborough and St. Nicholas Street, has a tricky one-way system. Take it slow and follow the signs to stay on track. Don’t worry if you need to loop around a bit—it’s all part of learning. Practising here will make you more confident with one-way roads everywhere.

We asked one of our driving instructors in Scarborough the following…

What makes learning to drive in Scarborough unique?

Scarborough’s a brilliant place to learn because there’s such a good mix of roads. I always start learners off in quieter spots like Newby or Crossgates, where you can build your confidence without too much stress. Then, when you’re ready, we move onto busier routes like the A64 or into town. Driving along Marine Drive is a great way to practise handling bends and changes in speed—and the views are a nice bonus!

What are the benefits of being able to drive in Scarborough?

Being able to drive here gives you so much freedom. You can easily visit places like Whitby, Filey, or the Yorkshire Moors, and you’re not stuck waiting for buses or relying on trains. It’s great for avoiding the summer crowds too. Having a car means you can find quieter beaches or hidden gems away from the tourist hotspots. It’s all about having the independence to go where you want, when you want.

What’s the most challenging thing about learning to drive in Scarborough?

The one-way system in the town centre, around Westborough and St. Nicholas Street, can feel confusing. My advice is always to take your time, keep calm, and follow the signs—it’s easier than it looks once you get the hang of it.
