Top Tips for Learning to Drive in Plymouth
Get Confident with Hill Starts
Plymouth’s hilly streets, especially in areas like Lipson and Stoke, can be tricky when you’re just starting out. That’s why our instructors help you master hill starts early, focusing on smooth clutch control and handbrake use. With the right practice, you’ll feel confident tackling any slope.
Tackle the Key Roundabouts
Busy roundabouts like Marsh Mills and Manadon often appear on driving test routes. Our local instructors guide you through these step by step, helping you learn correct lane positioning, signalling and timing. We start off during quieter times so you can build confidence before facing heavier traffic.
Make the Most of Road Variety
Plymouth offers a great mix of driving environments, from quiet estates to the fast-paced A38. This variety helps you build real-world skills, not just test-day readiness. We tailor your lessons to cover all types of roads so you’re fully prepared for life after the test.
We asked one of our driving instructors in Plymouth…
What will I expect on my first driving lesson in Plymouth?
You’ll probably feel a bit nervous and that’s completely normal. The first lesson is really just about getting to know the car, like how the pedals feel, how to steer, and what the mirrors do and when to use them. You’ll always go somewhere quiet, like around Elburton or the back roads near Plymstock, so you’ve got space to settle in. You won’t be thrown into anything too tricky. It’s all about easing you in and helping you feel comfortable.
What are the benefits of being able to drive in Plymouth?
Driving gives you loads more freedom, especially around a place like Plymouth where public transport can be hit and miss. Whether you’re heading up to Derriford for work, out to Wembury or even just doing the weekly shop at Transit Way or Roborough, having a car makes it all quicker and easier. The A38 also puts places like Exeter and Cornwall within easy reach.
What’s the most challenging thing about learning to drive in Plymouth?
The roads can definitely keep you on your toes. You’ve got tight streets with parked cars everywhere, like in Stoke or Mutley, then suddenly you’re on a busy roundabout like Marsh Mills. The hills can catch you out too, especially if you’re stopping and starting in traffic. But once you’ve had a bit of practice with things like clutch control and roundabout timing, it all starts to come together nicely.
