Top Tips for Driving in Cambridge

Get Comfortable with Cambridge’s Roundabouts

Cambridge has its fair share of roundabouts, and they can be tricky at first, especially during rush hour. The Milton Road roundabout, for example, connects some major routes, so you’ll often encounter busy traffic. The key here is preparation—check the signs and lane markings before you approach, and make sure you’re signalling clearly. Take it slow, and remember, it’s fine to wait for a safe gap before moving. Your instructor will help you practise until it feels second nature.

Practise Navigating Narrow Streets

Some of Cambridge’s streets, especially in the city centre, can be quite narrow and busy with cyclists and pedestrians. Areas like Mill Road or around the colleges can really test your awareness and spatial control. The trick is to take your time, give way when needed, and keep checking your mirrors. This is also a great chance to practise manoeuvres like parallel parking and dealing with meeting oncoming traffic in tight spaces.

Learn to Handle Busier Roads Like the A14

The A14 is a key route for getting used to higher-speed driving and dual carriageways. Joining from slip roads can feel a bit intimidating at first, so focus on matching your speed to the flow of traffic and using your mirrors and blind spots. Practising on this road will also help you understand lane discipline and safe overtaking. Once you’ve got the hang of it, you’ll feel much more confident handling faster roads.

We asked one of our driving instructors in Cambridge the following…

What makes learning to drive in Cambridge unique?

Cambridge offers a great mix of challenges, from the narrow, historic streets near King’s Parade to busier routes like the A14 or M11. You’ll also share the road with plenty of cyclists and tourists, which really sharpens your awareness. It’s a city where you can practice everything—from quiet suburban roads to navigating roundabouts and faster dual carriageways.

How does driving in Cambridge benefit learners?

Driving in Cambridge prepares you for all sorts of situations. Quiet areas like Cherry Hinton are great for the basics, while busier roads like Newmarket Road help build confidence. You’ll tackle roundabouts like Elizabeth Way and get used to sharing the road with cyclists, which makes you a more careful and skilled driver overall.

What’s the most challenging thing about learning to drive in Cambridge?

The biggest challenge is the volume of cyclists, especially on busy roads like Mill Road. It can feel chaotic with narrow lanes and lots going on, but it’s great for learning patience and precision. Tricky spots like Mitcham’s Corner can be confusing at first, but with practice, they’ll soon feel second nature.
