Training courses offered by us
The course we offer will all result in ADI certification if completed successfully, and all cover the same content. The only difference between the options is the intensity level.
We have both automatic and manual transmission vehicles available for training, so you can become an instructor whether you hold an automatic or a manual license.
Standard Intensive Training Course
Our standard intensive course comprises three parts:
- Part 1: Theory. All materials are provided, and you can complete this in your own time. Once you’ve completed the theory section, a theory test needs to be taken.
- Part 2: Practical Session 1. This section tests and teaches driving ability. An experienced instructor will help you to complete 10 hours of in-vehicle driving instructor training, spread over two days, followed by a test.
- Part 3: Practical Session 2. This session teaches instructional ability. Our Instructor trainers will take you through 42 hours of in-vehicle training spread over five days. After this, you’ll need to complete your final test.
We recommend joining our PDI programme between completing the course and taking the test to gain more experience and increase your chances of passing.
Once you have completed all three sections and passed all three tests, you’ll become a qualified ADI (Approved Driving Instructor).
This training course is available nationwide, in most main centres.
Residential Intensive Training Course
Held at our head office in Ripon, North Yorkshire, this course is almost identical to the Standard Intensive Course, the key differences are that it includes local accommodation and training provided by our Head Office trainers.
Flexible Course
An excellent choice for training at your own pace, enabling you to fit your learning into a busy schedule. Our flexible course covers the same content as the intensive courses but has no time pressure. This is also great for those who wish to teach in their region.

PDI training programme
We value our trainee instructors at Bill Plant Driving School and want to ensure they have the best training to become a certified ADI.
To assist us in achieving this, we created the PDI (potential driving instructor) programme. This allows trainee instructors to give driving lessons before passing their final test – putting their training into practice while also earning back their tuition fees.
Adding the PDI programme to your learning will provide you with vital experience that will enhance your driving instructor training and help you to pass the final test. It will also greatly benefit you as you start your new business.
