Top Tips for Driving in Dundee
Get Comfortable with Dundee’s Hills and Junctions
Dundee has its fair share of hills, especially around areas like Dundee Law and parts of the West End. It’s important to get confident with hill starts early on, as they’re a common feature in local driving routes and can catch people out during the test. Practising clutch control and getting used to balancing the pedals will make a big difference. Once you’ve got the hang of it, you’ll feel much more in control when pulling away on an incline or moving through stop-start traffic.
Learn the Kingsway Like the Back of Your Hand
The Kingsway (A90) is one of Dundee’s busiest roads and features a number of large roundabouts and lane changes. It’s a regular route on driving tests, so getting comfortable navigating it is a big step towards passing with confidence. Pay attention to signs, plan your lane changes early, and don’t rush through roundabouts. Practising at quieter times first can help you build up to peak traffic hours without the pressure.
Use Dundee’s Quieter Areas for Early Practice
If you’re just starting out, areas like Broughty Ferry, Craigiebank, or the streets near Ninewells Hospital offer quieter roads with fewer distractions. These are great for building basic skills like steering, gear changes, and simple junctions. Once you’re feeling more confident, you can gradually move into more complex areas like the city centre or over the Tay Road Bridge. The key is to take your time.

We asked one of our driving instructors in Dundee the following…
What will I expect on my first driving lesson in Dundee?
Your first lesson’s nothing to worry about, it’ll be nice and easy. You’ll head to a quiet area, somewhere like Douglas or the streets near Baxter Park, where there’s not much traffic about. You’ll get to grips with the basics like how to set up your seat and mirrors, move off properly, and stop safely. It’s really just about getting used to the car and building a bit of confidence.
What are the benefits of being able to drive in Dundee?
Driving gives you proper independence, especially around Dundee where public transport can be a bit hit or miss. Whether you’re commuting to uni, getting to work, or popping out to the shops, it’s much quicker when you’ve got your own wheels. You’re not having to rely on buses or lifts all the time. Plus, you’ve got some great places nearby for a drive — like up to Perth or out to Broughty Ferry on a sunny day.
What’s the most challenging thing about learning to drive in Dundee?
One of the trickier bits is getting used to the big roundabouts on the Kingsway, as they can be busy and a bit confusing when you first start out. Knowing which lane to be in and keeping an eye on the signs takes practice. There are also a few awkward junctions about town where you need to take your time. But with a bit of practice, you’ll get the hang of it.
