How much does it cost to become a driving instructor in the UK?

01/12/2021

Bill Plant Driving School is one of the leading driving schools in the UK. We train hundreds of new driving instructors each year with our various driving instructor training courses. We understand that learning to become a driving instructor takes a lot of drive and commitment, but you also need to account for the training costs involved with taking all of the tests.

We’ve put together this guide to outline all costs you will need to consider in order to become a driving instructor.

What are the Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) fees?

To become a fully qualified driving instructor, there are several tests and exams you will need to complete. The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) sets the Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) test and registration fees.

If you are unsuccessful during any part of the training course, you will have to retake the test and pay the test fee amount again. You have unlimited attempts for your Part 1 exam but you will only have 3 attempts for both your Part 2 and 3. You will also have to pay a fee to join the ADI register and a renewal fee for your registration every four years. Finally, having completed your training, you can opt for a trainee licence, giving you the ability to start teaching learner drivers while earning an income, for a small fee.

The ADI qualifying test fees and other registration fees are as follows:

Fee TypeCost
ADI part 1 test£81
ADI part 2 test£111
ADI part 3 test£111
First ADI certificate (or ‘badge’)£300
Trainee driving instructor license£140
Renewal or re-registration£300

For more information regarding the different types of ADI qualifications, check out the gov.uk website.
