Driving lessons in Milton Keynes FAQs

Is driving in Milton Keynes difficult?

Like most areas in the UK, Milton Keynes has its tricky spots but generally speaking, it is an easy area to get around. However, Milton Keynes does boast a whopping 130 roundabouts, which you may find daunting but will inevitably give you a lot of valuable experience.

For your first few driving lessons or whilst you are still building up your confidence, our instructors will take you on quieter roads with less traffic. As your skills develop, they will begin to take you on busier A-roads, where you’ll encounter things like roundabouts, dual carriageways and more complex types of junctions.

What types of driving lessons are there in Milton Keynes?

Bill Plant Driving School offers a range of courses and lessons to suit learners of types. Our instructors provide:

    • Intensive driving courses for anyone looking to pass their test as quickly as possible
    • Pass Plus courses for learners wanting additional training for driving in bad weather, on rural roads, and at night
    • Automatic driving lessons for people who don’t want to learn how to drive a manual car

    Driving in Milton Keynes

While learning to drive in Milton Keynes isn’t any more difficult than most other areas, it’s worth familiarising yourself with the roads surrounding the city. This will help you to feel as confident as you can on the day of your test, knowing there aren’t going to be any nasty surprises!

    Roundabouts in Milton Keynes

As we mentioned above, there are an incredible 130 roundabouts dotted around Milton Keynes. This means you’ll need to feel comfortable with navigating roundabouts as a learner driver – this includes everything from approaching a roundabout, signalling, choosing a lane, and exiting.

As you exit the driving test centre in Bletchley, you might quickly come across the Brunel roundabout – part of the B4034. While this isn’t the largest roundabout in Milton Keynes by a long stretch, it’s worth getting comfortable with the Brunel roundabout, since it’s so close to the test centre.

One of the trickiest roundabouts in Milton Keynes is the Redmoor roundabout, connecting the A5 and A421. One of the busiest roundabouts in the area, this might take some practice for a new driver. While this roundabout is larger than most, a couple of drives on it should help you to feel comfortable with its many exits.

Main roads in and around Milton Keynes

The roads that make up Milton Keynes city centre are very neatly-organised – lots of smaller, straight roads all connected by roundabouts. However, there are a number of one-way systems to be aware of! The city centre is surrounded by a number of interconnected A-roads – the A5, A509, A4146 and A421, to name just a few.

The A5 is the busiest major road in the Milton Keynes area. It runs along the west of the city, allowing drivers to reach Luton in the south and head towards Birmingham in the north. While the A5 presents no specific challenges to learner drivers, it’ll be helpful for any new driver to take the time to practise on this busy route.
