    Test Centre Locations in Leeds

Leeds has two main driving test centres located in Harehills and Horsforth. Each test centre offers a test environment best suited to your local area. Our Leeds driving instructors will usually recommend the test centre closest to your home, but you may wish to book another based on availability and where you’ll usually be driving. You’ll find a test centre in Wetherby plus centres in Wakefield and across Bradford for those a little further out.

Our driving lessons in Leeds will be tailored to the test centre you choose so you’ll be able to learn the Leeds test routes. Making sure that you are both comfortable and familiar with the local areas that your test takes place in, will ensure that, as a learner driver, you are confident when undertaking your driving test.

    Driving Lessons in Leeds FAQs

How much do driving lessons cost in Leeds?

The cost of driving lessons in Leeds will depend on the available instructors in your area. Fill in the form and you’ll get a quote in seconds from a Bill Plant instructor in Leeds. Discounts on bulk bookings are available.

Do you teach driving test routes in Leeds?

Test routes are not publicly available. The DVSA mission is to support ‘safe driving for life’ and this is something we agree with them on. While our driving lessons incorporate the Leeds test area, the main focus will always be on improving your driving and your overall familiarity with roads in Leeds. Your driving instructor will take you on lessons across the areas of Leeds around the test centre, helping you to learn potential routes, but this all forms part of the journey of learning to drive. There is never a guarantee that a particular route will come up during your driving test, so the primary focus of lessons is to improve your driving skills.

Which Leeds driving test centre should I choose?

Bill Plant always recommends you take your driving test close to where you live. This is both because of lesson length and your familiarity with the roads. You should learn on the type of roads you will be driving on the most often. For instance, if you live in Leeds city centre, we’d advise you to take your test at the Harehills test centre.

However, if you want to take a test at one of the other Leeds test centres, our instructors will be able to accommodate this.

    Roundabouts in Leeds

Gipton is a small residential area close to the Harehills test centre, which makes it a perfect location for anyone starting to learn to drive on roundabouts. There are several small and large roundabouts reasonably close to each other, which can be used on test routes.

Some of the busier roundabouts are located nearby in Crossgates and Seacroft, as these are located in more densely populated areas. These are almost guaranteed to come up on the test and are a must for any learner driver to experience.

    Local roads in Leeds

The city centre is constantly changing, and with occasional road closures and road works throughout the year in various areas, it is best to stay vigilant when driving through it. Peak times for traffic are typically between 8:00am and 9:30am, alongside afternoons between 3:30pm and 6:00pm, so it’s best to plan lessons to avoid some of the main roads in and out of the city during these times. In some cases, a 10 min drive can easily take upwards of half an hour.

Harehills Lane itself is a very busy street with lots of pedestrian crossings, traffic lights and cars parked on both sides, alongside a regular flow of buses, which helps experienced drivers practice different driving scenarios. It also has a very busy traffic light controlled junction at one end where it meets Roundhay Road, which is busy throughout the day.

This is an excellent road to practice on if you have a number of hours under your belt, but beginner drivers should avoid this road until they have gained more experience. The Sherburn area is a much safer bet for beginner drivers, as it is a much quieter and more residential area.

With Leeds being so close to the Yorkshire countryside, there are some fantastic country lane routes to be found if your lessons are planned out well. These quieter country roads are ideal for somebody who has just started their driving journey as the roads are wide and traffic levels of relatively limited.

    Motorways in Leeds

There is only one motorway that is located close to Leeds city centre, the M621, which wraps around the south side of the city past Elland Road, the local football stadium for Leeds United Football Club. It can be accessed via the A643 from Holbeck or by travelling through the A61 near Hunslet.

This motorway is great for learner drivers to practise on, as it is simply a 12.39km loop that is centrally located, meaning drivers can take the time to drive out, cover the entire stretch of motorway, and return to their start point, all within the time constraints of a 2-hour driving lesson.
