Drink Drivers UK Road Safety Warning

The first thing that we should stress is that drinking alcohol and driving a motor vehicle do not mix and the law in this respect is quite clear. However, there could be occasions when we perhaps visit friends or go out to a restaurant for dinner as part of an evening out or as a family celebration. It would be normal to have a glass of wine with our dinner over the evening, but what is the strength of that wine and what constitutes a glass?\r\n\r\nDrink Driving\r\n\r\nA few years ago, if we asked for a glass of wine in a pub or restaurant it would be 125ml, long gone are those days! Now it is perfectly normal for wine to be served to you in a glass that is 175ml and increasingly this is now 225ml, this latter represents an increase in volume of 80%! It is not just the size of glass that you should be aware of; it is the increasing strength of the wine. Again in the 1980’s a bottle of wine with an alcohol by volume of between 9% & 11% was the norm and one of 13% was virtually unknown, now this is quite normal and wine, even from Europe can be 14% ABV. So please be aware of this and the law in this matter.

Elderly Motorist Drives Wrong Way up Motorway

On Sunday night a pensioner was stopped by police after driving the wrong way up the M6. Fortunately there was no serious injury caused by this incident. The woman who was 82 may now face a charge of dangerous driving after travelling at speeds of up to 70mph in the wrong direction up the motorway.\r\n\r\nWe should all remember this lesson in motorway driving.

Approved Driving Instructor ADI

To be a driving instructor in the UK you need to make sure you are keeping the right side of the law. If you become a driving instructor with Bill Plant you will know that you have been trained by a Driving Standards Agency approved team.\r\n\r\nLegally any driving instructor who intends to charge for driving lessons is the UK must be qualified.\r\n\r\nThere are certain the requirements you must fulfill in order to be an Approved Driving Instructor in the UK:\r\n\r\nYou should be 21 years old or more.\r\n\r\nHave passed 3 driving exams.\r\n\r\nHave held a driving license for 3/6 years prior to being on the AID register.\r\n\r\nThe first part of the driving examinations is the Theory Test which now includes the Hazard Perception Test. A pass mark for this part of the driving test must be over 80% or more. The second part of the driving test to become a driving instructor is centred around driving ability including road types and conditions. Part 3 of the driving instructor test focuses on your ability to teach driving and lasts approx 1 hour.\r\n\r\nRemember though that the DSA is looking at raising driving standards in the UK so expect some changes both for driving instructors and learners alike.

About the Driving School, Lessons and Driving Instructor Training

Bill Plant is a Nationwide driving school and training centre for driving instructors. Over many years the Bill Plant Driving School has established a firm reputation for pure excellence in driving tuition and training for learner drivers and professional driving instructors alike. Their philosophy of friendly, relaxed driving instruction has made the Bill Plant Driving School the success it is today.\r\n\r\nA little known fact is that Bill Plant himself invented the concept of special driving lesson offers such as “first driving lesson free” and grouping together other lessons for a set fee with a view to making driving tuition more accessible to everyone.\r\n\r\nToday the Bill Plant Driving School has diversified into the business market offering corporate driving solutions and occupational road risk management training.

Corporate Manslaughter

Corporate Homicide Act coming in to effect on April 6, 2008 which will affect all companies regardless of their size.\r\n\r\nThe Times article pointed out that employers will face prosecution over crashes that involve the 3 million company cars and the 1 million employees whose own cars that are used on company business. In this latter category, employers have a duty to ensure that the employees own vehicle is properly insured for business use, has a current MOT certificate and is regularly maintained in accordance with the manufacturer’s guidelines.\r\n\r\nIt is a know fact that driving when part of ones job is the most dangerous of all work related activities, with over one third of UK accidents involving someone driving for work, it is sobering to note that 150 deaths and serious injuries are incurred in accidents involving someone driving for business each week.\r\n\r\nRegrettably, there will always be accidents involving motor vehicles, but research has shown that drivers who have participated in fleet training are far less likely to be involved in an accident, with the added benefit of less wear and tear on the vehicle and a reduced fuel consumption. Driving at work is a high risk activity and the time to act is now.

UK Driving Standards – Tougher Proposal

Under new proposals being considered by the government, young drivers may have to wait until they are 18 years of age before they are allowed to take their driving test, according to a report in the Daily Telegraph’s transport editor David Millward. Proposals that are being considered include:\r\n\r\n•    A series of questions designed to spot over confident motorists.\r\n\r\n•    A minimum 12 month tuition period to give young drivers more time to experience a range of differing conditions.\r\n\r\n•    Introduction of some form of psychological evaluation.\r\n\r\n•    Possibly introduction of motorway driving into the standard driving test.\r\n\r\n•    Consideration to make formal tuition compulsory rather than parents teaching their children.\r\n\r\n•    A graduated licence scheme imposing some curbs on drivers following passing their driving test.\r\n\r\nIt is believed that the full set of proposals will be published by the end of the year and whilst the current practical driving test is a good eye, hand and foot co-ordination assessment, and the driving theory exam tests the candidates memory, the government is keen to overhaul the system in an effort to cut the number of deaths amongst novice drivers.

Nervous Driving Lessons

We are not aware of anyone who was not nervous when they sat behind the wheel of a car for the first time, it’s only natural so don’t worry. A little nervousness can be helpful by kick starting your natural adrenalin helping you to stay focussed and aware of your surroundings, but when driving you should be more alert than if you were just following your normal day to day activities.\r\n\r\nIf you are of a nervous disposition, you should mention this when you enrol at the driving school and take your driving lessons with an instructor who specialises in helping nervous drivers. They have experience in working with people like you, calming your nerves right from the moment you sit behind the wheel for the first time, right up to taking your practical and theory test. These experienced qualified driving instructors have specialist knowledge in helping the nervous, using different measures to take to try and help you relax, have confidence, and pass your driving test smoothly.\r\n\r\nWhen it comes to the time when your driving instructor considers you are ready to take the driving test, there is nothing wrong in feeling nervous. The examiners fully understand, they have seen hundreds before you and they will try to put you at ease, remember they too, were learner drivers once.

M1 Hertfordshire Motorway Closed Fog Death

The breaking news today is of a crash on the M1 in Hertfordshire which involved a coach with a tanker and a number of other vehicles. It is thought that the accident occured because of bad driving conditions, in this case fog. Police have made the comment that people were driving too fast in road conditions where they simply couldn”t see.\r\n\r\nFog which causes low visibility on the UK Roads is a danger to even the most experienced of drivers. Time and time again we here that people are driving too fast in bad driving conditions. Our sympathies go out to those involved and we hope that people will learn just how important road safety today is.

Young Drivers – Experience Matters

Over the past week we have noticed in the newspapers and listened to debates on the radio about allowing newly qualified drivers on to the road immediately after they have passed both the practical and the theory test.\r\n\r\nThere is no doubt that it does take time to gain experience and the more experience a driver has the better that they are likely to be. The Government is making a lot of suggestions in the case of young people, that they would have to wait until they were 18 years of age, or wait until a year after they passed their driving test before they could go out unaccompanied are just two.\r\n\r\nWhen a person obtains a full licence for the first time it is only natural that they want to get into a car as quickly as possible and show their friends their new skills and this is only natural. However, the best thing any parent can do is to have their children take a course of Pass Plus lessons, which will give the newly qualified driver experience in all road conditions, night driving and motorway as an example, a sure way to cut down those accident statistics.

Cheap Petrol ? UK Tax Petrol Price Rise

Petrol Price Increase \r\n\r\nTax rises in the UK mean that petrol prices could move up even further so that the unleaded price will be 98p and it is thought that diesel will go over the £1 mark. The consumer is likely to suffer at these prices as are the petrol retailers. The 2007  budget announced by Gordon Brown advised of the increase.\r\n\r\nIn the UK the number of petrol stations is likely to fall if the increase in petrol prices continues as retailers cannot stay in business.  We will now stand back and watch as the supermarkets are likely to compete with the larger petrol companies such as BP over pricing.
